Students may be eligible for financial aid if they are enrolled in an approved Education Abroad program. To be considered for most forms of financial aid, students must:
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (Note: UConn’s On-Time Deadline is February 15th of each year)
- Be meeting the terms of the University’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Policy
Aid Eligibility
In addition to the information in the chart above, loans and/or scholarship programs are available:
- Federal Direct (Parent) PLUS
- Graduate PLUS Loan
- Private/Alternative Educational Loans
- Scholarship Opportunities
Note: Students awarded Federal Work-Study (FWS) who go abroad in the fall should request via email (studentjobs@uconn.edu) that the Student Employment Office hold their spring FWS amount. Students who do not contact the Student Employment Office by the established deadline will have their FWS for the academic year cancelled.
Cost of Studying Abroad
The cost to go abroad varies depending on the program. Budget sheets for each program are available on each program’s online brochure, located on the UConn Education Abroad website.
Aid eligibility for students studying abroad varies depending on the type of program for which they are enrolled. To determine which aid a student may be eligible for, reference the chart below:
*If you are participating in an Affiliated Program (ex: API, CIEE, etc.): A Consortium Agreement for Participating in a Study Abroad Program form must be submitted before any financial aid request can be processed, show as an anticipated deferral, or disburse to the University fee bill.
In addition, certain institutions will have their own form that must be submitted to them in order to defer payment.
Students are responsible for using the refund to provide payment to the sponsoring institution or program. UConn does not send payment directly to the Host institution/program. Students should also be aware that some programs might require them to pay up front, rather than wait for their financial aid. Please check with the individual program for further details.
